The virtual cell has had two roads — simulate the mechanism, or learn from data. In 2026 a third is opening: white-box models that fuse biological knowledge with LLM reasoning to predict how a cell responds to a perturbation and show the mechanism behind the guess. It’s the interpretable turn we’ve wanted — and this season also brought the honest test it has to pass: a plausible explanation is not a correct prediction.
